Juicing: Healthy, Healing or Hype?

Why spend so much money on juice - does it really make a difference with your health?

Have you ever made 20 gallons of juice in a day? I have

I had the joy to work with my friends Jason, Bryan, Josh and Shawn a few years back to open a few juice bars in Atlanta called Press Together. We served only Organic Cold Pressed Juice and it was a hit. We had 3 locations and hosted corporate wellness events as well as kept a few of the Pro sports teams in Atlanta stocked with fresh juice. More on the benefits of juicing below. Here are a few pics of Press Together:

Healthy or Hype?

There is a lot of hype around juice and I would say unless you’re juicing organic produce yourself that is as local and fresh and possible - it’s probably not good for you.

When we got into it, I had been inspired by seeing my dad go to a wellness retreat and juice 6 days/week and lost like 50lbs in 6 months and he said he felt better than ever.

I decided to try it after some of my health issues I got in India - and did a 21 day juice fast. It was pretty epic. The first few days of a juice fast can be tough because your body is detoxing, but after that - you have more energy than ever because your body doesn’t need to exert so much energy on digestion.

The evidence is there for organic juice. Organic - because you don’t want to juice high (any) concentrations of herbicides and pesticides.

But why is it so good?

My big belief is that juicing is flooding your body with nutrients and enzymes that you can’t eat enough food to enjoy. I don’t think we should live on juice but supplementing with it here and there is great. I recently started drinking 8 oz of fresh celery juice every morning because of all the benefits I recently learned about celery.

Here are some more benefits below. What I will say is you can find benefits from all types of juice for all different reasons. I think one thing that many overlook is the fact that all forms of fresh organic juice - introduce minerals and plant compounds that help buffer excess acids, support cellular detoxification, and reduce oxidative stress.

The trick is that whole-food juices deliver concentrated micronutrients and plant compounds that are difficult to consume at therapeutic levels through cooked or processed meals. For example, cold-pressed juices retain high concentrations of antioxidants like vitamin C, beta-carotene, polyphenols, and flavonoids, all of which play a proven role in reducing inflammation, preventing chronic disease, and protecting against cellular damage[^1].

  • Brain Health Support

In a year-long randomized controlled trial, participants who drank pomegranate juice daily experienced improved memory retention and learning performance, compared to those drinking a placebo[^2]. Similarly, just eight weeks of flavanone-rich orange juice improved cognitive function in older adults, especially in areas of verbal fluency and executive function[^3].

  • Cardiovascular Health

Juicing—particularly with vegetables like beets and carrots—has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels due to the presence of nitric oxide precursors and antioxidants[^4].

  • Immune Function and Skin Vitality

Fresh juices packed with vitamins A and C support collagen synthesis, wound healing, and the immune system. Carrot and citrus juices, for instance, are rich in bioactive compounds that combat oxidative stress[^5].

  • Convenient Nutrient Absorption

Juicing allows the body to absorb vitamins and minerals more efficiently, especially for individuals with compromised digestion or limited time to prepare full meals[^6].

Try skipping a meal every once in a while - perhaps dinner - and let your body take a break from digesting and enjoy pure nutrients from fresh juice. A quick great option is fresh squeezed lemonade with a little raw organic honey.
